Subject: Re: Regular Zoom Meetings - Braver Angels Birmingham Alliance and Charlie Kirk
Tom:
Huge interest in Turning Point USA has been generated at colleges and high schools in connection with Charlie Kirk's murder. Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA flooded with requests for new high-school, college chapters
The Braver Angels Birmingham Alliance should consider whether it can advance its goals by hitching onto Charlie Kirk's legacy of "don't stop talking." DR. CHLOE CARMICHAEL: Charlie Kirk’s Final Warning: Don’t Stop Talking – IJR.
If the Birmingham Alliance thinks this has potential in reaching out to Alabama colleges and high schools to hold Braver Angels type events, I would be interested in participating in efforts to do that.
Thanks.

Hi!
It has been suggested the Birmingham Alliance have Zoom meetings every 4 weeks lasting about 30 minutes. I have chosen the third Monday at 6pm. If this is not convenient we can agree on a different date and time.
The agenda would be an update on activities locally and nationally (5-6 minutes); Questions or suggestions for this alliance activities (5 minutes) and then a 15 to 20 minute open discussion on a topic submitted prior to the meeting. This discussion will follow the spirit of the BA way, respecting the input of all, asking questions of curiosity, etc. The Braver Way!
The first topic is the deficit, is it a concern to you? If so, what would you do to fix it?
If desired those interested can stay on the call to discuss for another 30 minutes.
I hope to see you on Zoom

Subject: Suggested Auburn University protocols re offensive social media posts
Dear President Roberts:
This email is being written to suggest alternative protocols that Auburn University might adopt regarding offensive social media posts, instead of the approach Auburn took of firing employees for making such social media posts.
I believe such suggested protocols may better fulfill Auburn's values of "respect, integrity and responsibility" referred to in your statement at Auburn University (@AuburnU) / X, than the employee firing approach that was taken.
The alternative suggested protocols would consist of these:
1. The President's office would solicit that social media posts made by members of the Auburn community that other members of the community consider offensive/objectionable be reported by such other members to the President's office. The President's office would maintain a public file of such reports, including the identity of the member of the Auburn community who made the post that has been objected to and the full content of the post. The member of the Auburn community who reported the post would also be identified in the public file, unless such member requests anonymity. The President's office would notify the social media poster that it has received an objection to his or her post. If the reporter of the post has not requested anonymity, the poster and the reporter of the post will be encouraged to meet in person and converse about the "feelings" and reasons of the poster for making the post and the "feelings" and reasons of the other member in objecting to the post. At the request of either, a representative of the President's office will attend the conversation.
2. From time to time, the President's office would hold campus discussion events at which social media posts that have been objected to would be discussed and the makers of such social media posts may be given an opportunity to discuss the reasons and "feelings" of the maker. Also, there would be discussed whether members of the Auburn community think the protocols that are being followed regarding offensive/objectionable social media posts are helping fulfill Auburn's values of "respect, integrity and responsibility."
President Roberts, I hope you will consider whether these suggested alternative protocols have merit and perhaps make a decision in favor of Auburn University adopting such alternative protocols regarding offensive/objectionable social media posts.
Thank you. (FYI, I am not an Auburn graduate and am not otherwise affiliated with Auburn.)
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Ok, I sent the below email to Auburn University President Roberts.
The censorship issue, governmental and otherwise, is dominating in the political news at the moment, and there are many possible targets in Alabama to email to in connection with the censorship issue.
I will give this further thought.

Dear President Roberts:
Brian Lyman's article today Who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn't? | Alabama Reflector concludes by saying, "But if Auburn is going to start obsessively monitoring employees’ comments on public events, you should at least let your workers know what is and isn’t free speech. And who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn’t."
The below email I sent to you on Saturday suggested alternative protocols that Auburn University could adopt regarding offensive social media posts, instead of the approach Auburn took of firing employees for making such social media posts.
I think such suggested protocols for Auburn to adopt are the best answers to Brian Lyman's questions of "what is and isn’t free speech. And who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn’t."

Subject: 'Who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn't?'
I previously forwarded to you an email I sent to Auburn University President Christopher Roberts this past Saturday, in which I suggested to him alternative protocols that Auburn could adopt regarding offensive social media posts, instead of the approach Auburn took of firing employees for making such social media posts.
In an article yesterday Who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn't? | Alabama Reflector, Brian Lyman concludes his article by saying, "But if Auburn is going to start obsessively monitoring employees’ comments on public events, you should at least let your workers know what is and isn’t free speech. And who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn’t."
Brian Lyman's article prompted me to send Auburn President Roberts a second email, saying that I think my suggested protocols for Auburn to adopt regarding offensive social media posts would be the best answers to Brian Lyman's questions of "what is and isn’t free speech. And who gets to speak freely at Auburn, and who doesn’t."
This second email to President Roberts is below.
I think, to the extent the addressee groups and other addressees seek political dialogue beyond among themselves, that the Auburn matter offers much opportunity for engagement, including communicating about the matter to other Alabama universities, to the Alabama business community that has its interest in free speech for employees, and to Alabama TV stations.
If I can help with any such communications, please let me know.
Thanks.
