Subject: Whom should be emailed to tell the Alabama people about Charlie Kirk?
Barry Marks, on his Facebook, posted this:
For the record, as shared by a friend:To whom should the foregoing information about Charlie Kirk be emailed in order to tell the Alabama people about Charlie Kirk?
“Charlie Kirk should still be alive today. Violence is not the answer for our civil discourse today. Even when someone weaponizes their platform to harm and hurt people across our nation.
Here's a list of things Charlie Kirk said and did:
Mocked empathy, calling it a “made-up new age term that does a lot of damage”. https://x.com/JasonSCampbell/status/1580241307515383808
Declared some gun deaths were “worth it” for the Second Amendment—openly saying fatalities are a “prudent deal” to keep gun rights. Charlie Kirk Says Gun Deaths ‘Unfortunately’ Worth it to ... - Newsweek
Criticized the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and called Martin Luther King Jr. “awful...not a good person”. Charlie Kirk Flips on Martin Luther King Jr., Attacks Gro... - Newsweek
Amplified COVID-19 misinformation, calling mandates “medical apartheid” and touting hydroxychloroquine as “100% effective”. For Charlie Kirk, Conservative Activist, the Coronavirus Is a Cudgel - The New York Times
Said that according to "God's perfect law," Gay people should be stoned to death. https://x.com/danielsogay/status/1965887308454101427
Described transgender people as an “abomination” and a “throbbing middle finger to God,” using biblical references to cement his stance, and painted LGBTQ+ equality as a threat to American life. https://x.com/ErinInTheMorn/status/1701335984309223455?s=20
Pushed the “great replacement” conspiracy, claiming immigrants are planned to supplant white Americans. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/19/us/politics/charlie-kirk-conservatives-coronavirus.html
Sparked outrage in academia with his “Professor Watchlist,” targeting alleged leftist professors. US rightwing group targets academics with Professor Watchlist | US education | The Guardian
Repeated antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories, especially about "Cultural Marxism" in universities. Amid scandal over Turning Point USA’s spending, Charlie Kirk is under fire from the right | Political Research Associates
Publicly called for an "amazing patriot" to bail out David DePape, the man who had assaulted Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi. Charlie Kirk: 'Bail Out' Alleged Paul Pelosi Attacker
”My 2cents: this is the result of unrestrained populism, with its doctrine that learning, intelligence and experience can be replaced by done sort of “alternative meritocracy” valuing thing that feel good and suppoet prejudices, myths, conspiracy theories and the idea, as Isaac Asimov said "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'".
Charlie Kirk was 31 years old, with an undistinguished education record and no meaningful practical experience in medicine, psychology, or theology. He told people what they wanted to hear, appealing to their worst instincts and without concern for the consequences.
I am truly sorry a sick, confused young man killed Charlie Kirk, but to lionize him as a martyr is to ignore that he preached the very sort of bigotry and hatred America spent generations trying to eradicate.
Thank you for such emailing suggestions that you make.
