Subject: ABA Task Force for American Democracy and Pam Bondi
Dear Marty and Elizabeth,
I hope the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy is considering how it should approach the Pam Bondi nomination.
I am drafting an open letter to my Alabama Senators Tuberville and Britt regarding Pam Bondi, which draft letter is set out at The Final Battle against Donald J. Trump: Open letter to Senators Tuberville and Britt re Pam Bondi.
I hope my open letter to Senators Tuberville and Britt is meritorious, and, if it is, I can get prominent Alabamians to sign on to the letter, as may help get the attention of the Senators.
Also, perhaps my open letter is helpfully suggestive to the ABA Task Force for American Democracy.
Sincerely,
Rob

Subject: Former Alabama U.S. attorneys and Pam Bondi nomination
Dear former U.S. attorneys Alice Martin, Joyce Vance, Doug Jones and Jay Town:
I have an open letter to Senators Tuberville and Britt regarding the Pam Bondi nomination, which open letter is at The Final Battle against Donald J. Trump: Open letter to Senators Tuberville and Britt re Pam Bondi.
My open letter says that the United States is in a crisis about the rule of law and constitutional and other checks on Presidential power, that the crisis is embodied in four years (or more) of loud charges and countercharges about weaponization of the justice system, and that the 2024 election has not ended the crisis.
If you agree there is such a crisis and the 2024 election has not ended the crisis, I would like to suggest that the four of you (two Republicans and two Democrats) jointly send a letter to Senators Tuberville and Britt that speaks to the crisis from the perspective former United States attorneys in Alabama, and which letter you would publicize to be informative to Alabamians about the matter.
I can understand if such a joint letter is an impossibility for you, but I thought it worthwhile to propose the idea to you.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Last Thursday I submitted the below message to NAAG using the contact form at Contact Us - National Association of Attorneys General
As the nonpartisan national forum for attorneys general to collaboratively address issues important to their work in protecting the rule of law and the United States Constitution, is the National Association of Attorneys General addressing the issue of the threat of Trump destroying the independence of the Department of Justice? I am making this inquiry for inclusion in a blog of mine at https://trumptweet.blogspot.com/2024/11/what-will-happen-to-rule-of-law-under.html. Thank you.
I believe the online confirmation of my message submission said I could follow up using the above email address if two business days elapsed without getting a response from NAAG. I have not received a response and am availing of sending this email.
I am in Alabama and have also sent the below email to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall about the importance of an independent Department of Justice in the functioning of our democracy and the rule of law.
I hope NAAG will address the threat that Donald Trump poses to the ruled of law and to the independence of the Department of Justice and how that could have bearing on the independence of state Attorneys General and district attorneys.
Thank you for your attention to this.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Importance of independence of law enforcement to the rule of law
Dear Attorney General Marshall and Mr. Errek P. Jett (c/o Mr. Daryl Bailey):
The American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy, which was formed in August 2023, for a year had a main focus on bolstering voter confidence in elections by safeguarding the integrity and non-partisan administration of elections, and by providing support for election workers and officials. Task Force for American Democracy
This focus of the Task Force on the administration of elections has become much less critical in light of Donald Trump's decisive victory in the 2024 election.
As a result, I am urging that the ABA Task Force shift its attention to the importance to democracy and the rule of law of an independent Department of Justice. (This carries over, I believe, to the importance to democracy and the rule of law of independent Attorneys General and independent district attorneys.)
I am seeking avenues in Alabama for having discussions about the importance of an independent Department of Justice in the functioning of our democracy and the rule of law.
If the Alabama Attorney General's office or the Alabama District Attorneys Association would like to have involvement in the discussions I am seeking to bring about, please let me know.
For more information about what I am doing, please see The Final Battle against Donald J. Trump: What will happen to rule of law under Trump?
Thank you.
